At the time of the 22nd February earthquake, I was part of the way through painting my sculpture Heart is Where the Home is. In fact, I was in my studio with some of the wet panels when the quake happened. I just stood there, saying silently in my head, “Please don’t move, please don’t move.” And they didn’t.
So how to respond in art? The earthquakes have added resonance to the meaning of Heart is Where the Home is but the idea for that sculpture preceded them. So while I was still working on the large sculpture, I made these small ones as a response to the fragility of our city.
