Chairs and Collages

CHAIRS

These are one-off paintings which are also chairs that can be used singly or as a set.

They are, in some ways, a departure from my usual artistic concerns. I had wanted to do this project for a long time. This was partly as an observational drawing and painting exercise and partly because of the design challenge of marrying the painted plant forms to the elegant form of the chair. Of course, I also wanted them to be enjoyed and bought – either as a group or singly. These chairs are all now sold! But I also have 2 unpainted chairs of the same style I would be happy to paint on a theme as a commission.

But wait, there’s more! Now the last 2 chairs of this set are commissioned! Talk to me about painting something else…..

The chairs are oak with plywood seats, painted in several layers of artists’ acrylics & varnished with 3 coats of high performance polyurethane. The polyester cushion cover can be removed from its foam inner, machine washed & ironed on the steam setting with a cloth between iron & cover to prevent shininess.

COLLAGES

I had fun making collages from drawings of the chairs. I focused on the shapes of chair, spaces between slats and shadows when I put the chair in the sun. I prepared the coloured paper by painting in artists’ acrylics (in colours appropriate to the seasonal theme of each chair) on watercolour paper, then cut and tore pieces which I applied to more of the same paper with acid free glue. Sometimes I added coloured pencil. I mounted them on foam board – they can be hung as they are or framed. Their dimensions vary between 10 and 24cm. Except where noted, they are NZD50 each.

There are additional collages currently discounted to $25 ready to hang/$15 unmounted.
